Amboseli Wetland Birds

Fly from Nairobi to Amboseli, landing with Kilimanjaro filling the horizon. Transfer to Amboseli Serena Lodge. After lunch, head to the Enkongo Narok Swamp for your first afternoon birding session. The swamp edge is alive with Yellow-billed Storks probing the mud, Sacred Ibises feeding in the shallows, and Hammerkopfs building their enormous nests. Scan the reed beds for Lesser Jacanas, African Marsh Harriers, and the elusive Purple Swamphen. The open areas around the swamp host Crowned Cranes, Black-winged Lapwings, and flocks of Northern Pangolin (Crowned Plovers).

Depart at dawn for a full day birding across Amboseli's diverse habitats. The morning focuses on the dry grasslands where Secretary Birds hunt and Kori Bustards—Africa's heaviest flying birds—strut through the grass. Look for them near Observation Hill where the terrain provides excellent visibility. Drive to Lake Amboseli, a seasonal soda lake that attracts flocks of Flamingos, Yellow-billed Storks, and Gulls. The lakebed's alkaline mud supports breeding colonies of Black-winged Stilts and Pied Avocets. After a bush lunch, the afternoon session targets the Sinet Delta swamps where Pygmy Geese, White-backed Duck, and African Jacanas can be found among the floating vegetation. The acacia woodlands yield Beautiful Sunbirds, Yellow-fronted Tinkerbirds, and the spectacular Grey-crowned Cranes.

A dedicated raptor morning, timed to coincide with the thermals rising from the plains. Amboseli hosts an impressive diversity of raptors including Martial Eagles, Verreaux's Eagles, Crowned Eagles, and the rare Black-breasted Snake Eagle. Drive to Observation Hill for panoramic views and scan the skies for Bearded Vultures and White-backed Vultures. The afternoon focuses on the wetland margins where African Fish Eagles perch in dead trees overlooking the water, and Goliath Herons—Africa's largest heron—stand motionless in the shallows. Return to the lodge for an evening birding session targeting Fiery-necked Nightjars as dusk falls.

Rise early for a final birding session at the swamp, when bird activity peaks. The morning light on Kilimanjaro creates perfect photography conditions as Yellow-billed Storks, Pelicans, and Cranes feed in the shallows. After breakfast, take a final walk through the lodge grounds targeting any remaining species. Transfer to the airstrip for your flight back to Nairobi.
